Kitchen islands are becoming increasingly popular by the day and are a definite must-have if you are renovating your kitchen. They make a great contribution to your kitchen’s interior, whilst providing extra counter space, storage and, often, seating.
5 Ways to Design the Perfect Kitchen Island
By following our kitchen island design tips, you can give your kitchen a complete revamp! Here are our top tips on how to design the perfect kitchen island:
1. Get Your Sizing Right
The most important thing when designing a kitchen island is to ensure that your cabinet doors from the kitchen counter do not conflict the cabinet doors from your island (don’t forget to consider dishwasher, oven and fridge doors too). If you feel things will be a little bit tight, you may want to consider opting for pull out storage baskets for your island, rather than cabinets- we will discuss this further in tip #3.
2. Incorporate Your Kitchen Appliances
Incorporating your kitchen appliances into your kitchen island is a great idea for saving space. Consider placing your oven, dishwasher or even a spare sink in the centre island. If you opt to do this, ensure that you have the things nearby that go hand-and-hand with the appliance. For example, if you choose to have your dishwasher in the centre island, or even your main sink, you want to ensure that a garbage bin is nearby, to save you from walking to the opposite end of the kitchen every time you need to dispose of leftovers.
3. Leave Space for Storage
One of the biggest perks of having a kitchen island is the fact that you get extra storage. There are so many different options, so you can decide on the one that best suits you and your needs. Some ideas for extra storage could be glass cabinets for storing wine, champagne and scotch glass; shelves holding pull-out baskets for vegetables, like potatoes and onions; you could even combine some ideas for each side and throw in a mini fridge for alcoholic beverages or items that are not required regularly.
4. Consider the Island’s Workspace
If you are planning on using the kitchen island as the main workspace in your kitchen, it is important to ensure that the island is big enough, as if it is too narrow or small, it will quickly become a frustration as you will be constantly running out of space. Make sure you get the right measurements depending on the islands function.
5. Don’t be Shy to Change it Up
Your kitchen island does not have to be the standard square. Feel free to get creative and make your kitchen a little unique; change the shape, use different building materials or give it a bold colour in an otherwise neutral kitchen. The possibilities are endless!
